Aligoté, the forgotten grape of Burgundy?
If you’ve been anywhere near a Vineking shop in the last month you’ll no doubt have overheard us raving about the great 2015 Burgundy vintage and how it may be the vintage of the century. We’ll have been rushing to get tasters in your glasses of the delicious ripe and ready Chardonnay’s and complex Pinot Noir’s of this great region. It’s true that these grapes are the shining stars of the appellation. However there is another grape battling for attention, and in this exceptional vintage it’s pushing out it’s elbows and shouting to be at the front of the En Primeur queue. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the lesser-known, no less fabulous Bourgogne Aligoté!
Whilst it only accounts for around 5 per cent of production in the area, winemakers have begun to return to this variety. Known for it’s high acidity and comparatively low alcohol, Aligoté is a grape that really shows it’s true colours in the warmer years. It can maintain acid levels despite the high temperatures and long hours of sunshine and as a result gives fantastically balanced wines that are ready to drink.
We’ll be showing off a great example of Aligoté this weekend, aged in older barrels to impart some richness from oxidation rather than oak it softens the acidity whilst maintaining the freshness of apple, citrus and peach flavours that continue long into the finish. Come down and give this unappreciated grape a chance!
