2020 Sordo Barolo is a classic Italian wine from the Piedmont region, known for its aromatic profile of ripe red berries, rose petals, mint, and spice, with a full-bodied, well-structured taste and firm tannins. It's a long-aging wine that becomes more complex over time.
Sordo was founded in 1912 by Giuseppe Sordo, the present owner’s grandfather, and is now under the guidance of its third generation, Giorgio Sordo, with his daughter Paola. Situated in the district of Castiglione Falleto and overlooking the slopes of La Morra, Sordo is unique in that it bottles 8 Barolo Cru wines, the only producer able to do this in the entire region. As well as bottling traditional varieties such as Dolcetto and Barbera, they also produce the peppery Verduno Pelaverga, one of the smallest DOCs in Italy. From vines aged 10-40 years old grown in vineyards in Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno and Grinzane Cavour. After picking, the grapes are crushed and de-stemmed before undergoing a long submerged cap maceration. The wine is then vinified in stainless steel before a further 6 months in stainless steel ageing. The wine is then transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months.
Tasting note: Red garnet in colour. Delicate, intense, full and lingering aromas; flavour warm, full, complex, dry and harmonious. Its austerity is linked to the presence of sweet and complex tannins.
