Planeta’s winemaking story began in the 1990s, when founder Diego Planeta first started up a new project that would put wine at the centre of the family’s farming activities.
After establishing the first winery in Ulmo, the family began a quest to find the best wine-growing areas in Sicily, in order to build up independent wineries that would work with both indigenous vines and international varieties – and cultivate the very best of both. It was a journey that would see them establish vineyards at Menfi, Vittoria, Noto and on the slops of Mount Etna before acquiring their latest property in Capo Milazzo.
Today, the family oversees seven wineries in five different areas, with a total of 400 hectares of land. Each winery has its own leading winemaker working with sustainable practices and always aiming to protect the beauty and ecosystems of their areas. A strong work ethic and respect for the land are characteristics that have been passed down through 17 generations since the family first acquired their Ulmo estate back in 1694.
