Adi Badenhorst is probably one of the most exciting winemakers in South Africa – and some would call him the most frustrating. His laid back, self- deprecating and playful manner keeps you guessing, making you wonder whether he actually know what he is doing or whether he just chucks grapes in a vat and hopes for the best. However, we can safely say that we know full well that he knows exactly what he’s doing, having been fans of his wines for years.
The grapes for the Secateurs Chenin are sourced from old vines yielding as little as 4 tons/hectare and are 100% organic. This wine is however not 100% Chenin, there is a little helping of Palomino in the blend, which certainly adds to its character. Greengage and fresh green herbs on the nose, with scents of sweet meadow flowers that carry through to the palate – think bowls of fresh sun-kissed apricots, orange blossom and a gentle mineral note from the granite soils. Gorgeous and persistent on a lemon drizzle finish with a hint of white pepper spice.
Pair with roasted white meats or a creamy fish pie and lots of fresh vegetables.
AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. 180ha of old bushvines grow in the Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain.
