Carinus Family Vineyards is a collaboration between two friends and distant relatives, Danie and Hugo Carinus. Carinus Family Vineyards is rooted in five generations of vineyard cultivation using their selection from their 100s hectares to focus on what works in each area.
After growing and selling their grapes to established wine producers for several years, Danie and Hugo eventually began crafting their own. They still collaborate with exceptional winemakers to produce our limited range, prizing quality over quantity. Inspired by the soil and sustained by a passion for artisanal winemaking, this union showcases the best cultivars in the South African Winelands has to offer. Their fresh wines express the terroir and their refined winemaking process honours and celebrates the cultivars with minimal interference.
This 100% Pinot Noir comes from the well drained soils on the Upper Devon Valley vineyards which comprise clay and iron rich decomposed granite soils. Destemmed, fermented and aged in old French barrels. Wine-making by the Carinus family with Lukas van Loggerenberg. This wine is matured in natural vessels, including old French oak barrels and concrete egg fermenters. The Pinot Noir is matured in 400l old French barrels for 9 months.
Tasting Note: Ripe cherries and bruised mulberry on the nose. Also an inviting note of dried herbs and sweet spices. The palate shows a bright acidity and subtle, powdery tannins, which adds length to a delicately savoury finish.
Food Match: A wonderful Pinot noir, great with Turkey but has the depth to work with roasted duck too.
