Natte Valleij, a historic family farm in Stellenbosch run by winemaker Alex Milner, has received critical acclaim for his site specific Cinsault from various pockets of extraordinary old vine parcels across the Cape.
Originating from South Africa’s Cape West Coast, the 2023 NAT Pinotage offers a fresh take on this iconic variety. A lighter, more elegant style than typical Pinotages, it highlights the grape’s Cinsault and Pinot Noir heritage. The wine displays deep color and aromas of ripe berry fruits, with a hint of charcuterie. On the palate, you’ll find layers of macerated plums and subtle savory notes, complemented by lively freshness and a fine tannic structure. Balanced and bright, it’s a Pinotage that feels both refined and vibrant.
Tasting note: Tim Atkin 93 "Why make Pinotage like a Cabernet Sauvignon?", asks Alex Milner. Why indeed? This engagingly scented example hails from a bush-vine parcel planted in 1997 on decomposed granite and is sappy, refreshing and light-bodied, with good underlying concentration, negligible oak and strawberry and red cherry fruit.
