Heaphy Vineyard is a small winery in the north-west corner of New Zealand’s South Island, a region named Nelson Tasman. Our winery is situated high above Tasman Bay on the Moutere Hills, where our 10ha of long-established vineyards are defined by Moutere’s signature clay soils. First planted in 1973, our vines are amongst the very oldest productive vineyards in New Zealand.
100% Pinot Noir from 3 vineyards in Tasman, Upper Moutere and Ruby Bay. Mostly handpicked and destemmed grapes that are processed in open fermenters. Following délestage twice a day for about 3 weeks to ensure a gentle extraction of colour and tannins, the grapes are pressed, and a portion will then go into barrels and puncheons where the wine will spend the next 10 months. Topped regularly, the malolactic fermentation happens when the winery warms up in spring. When the wine is ready, we filter the wine and bottle.
Tasting note: A gently perfumed and characterful wine, expressive of Nelson unique breezy and warm terroir. A well-balanced profile, showing plenty of fruit, and desired juiciness.
Food match: Mushroom risotto, barbequed meats or stuffed roasted butternut squash.
