In 1900, Humberto da Silva Cardoso left Sétubal for Brazil to find his fortune. A little while later, he returned having realised the grass was not greener and that his fortune had been under his nose all along. He married a local girl from a family of vintners, and started a road company which supplied Lisbon and the surrounding regions with buses and other modes of public transport. He eventually sold this company, and ever the entrepreneur, chose to reinvest the profits in viticulture and so began over 100 years of winemaking history. The winery is now on its 4th generation of vintners, and show no signs of returning to the automobile industry any time soon – thank goodness!
Vinha dos Paradais is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Fernão Pires, sourced from a small single vineyard which is known locally as the ‘Vineyard of Sparrows’, as these little birds are frequent visitors and seek out the perfectly ripe fruit ahead of the harvest. Lemon yellow in hue with green reflections, and a tropical nose with light vegetal notes of fresh asparagus. The palate is vibrant and fresh with zippy acidity, fine minerality and a salinity which is indicative of its proximity to the Atlantic coast.
Enjoy with Lemon Sole, Tempura Prawns and smoked Salmon.
