Girlan from Alto Adige

Located in Alto Adige · Italy

The current incarnation of Girlan was established in 1923, but the estate has a long history dating back to around a thousand years earlier – documents from 1085 mention this as a wine-growing area.

There is a strong mix of heritage and innovation here, with the modern winery housed in a 16th-century farm that also has a labyrinth of cellars that are perfect for aging wine in the traditional way. The grapes that go into these wines come from around 200 partner families, who manage around 215 hectares of vineyards and are dedicated to producing fruit of the highest quality – all of which is harvested by hand.

Drawing its grapes from around the Oltradige and Bassa Atesina areas, the winery works with a wide range of varieties including household names such as chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and gewürztraminer alongside less-favoured varieties like vernatsch and lagrein. These go into making three different wine collections – Selezioni, Vigneti and Classici, which are classified as DOC Alto Adige.
