“David & Nadia Sadie are, as always, making thrilling wine.” – Jancis Robinson, September 2021

For all the success and justified recognition, when it comes to viticulture and winemaking, it’s business as usual at David & Nadia. Low yields, attentive, dry-land farming and sensitive, hands-off winemaking in neutral vessels remains the order of the day. David Sadie likens 2020 to both 2017 and 2015, two vintages increasingly considered amongst the best in the Cape’s history. An overall moderate year, not excessively hot and with decent winter rains, the wines benefit from beautifully low pHs which have helped to retain an early-picked, mineral character.

Elpidios is a blend of 38% Grenache Noir, 36% Syrah, 10% Pinotage, 9% Carignan and 7% Cinsault. One Syrah component aged in concrete and this year some concrete was introduced to the Grenache too. The rest of the components are vinified and aged in foudre and used 500L barrels. Silky, bilberry and damson fruits – red fruit focused with some spice and herbal undertones. Wild strawberry. A real shape shifter, the Elpidios evolves and offers up new nuances and faces with time in the glass. Sumptuous but not rich, silky but with a bright core. Super refined. Perhaps the cuvee that has seen the most dramatic improvement over the past few years.
