Lying in the foothills of Mount Brown in the Waipara Valley, this abandoned wine estate was only rediscovered in 2002 and has since quickly become something of a success story. Waipara has a greater variation in temperature between night and day than more northerly Marlborough, which in turn boosts flavour and aroma, yet retains the acidity and freshness in the wine. Together with much lower yields, it’s no surprise the valley is fast establishing
a reputation for quality. Aromatic varieties such as Pinot Gris are perfectly suited to Mount Brown’s small, sheltered stony site, and winemaking here is of a very high order.
Hand-thinned to maintain low yields, the grapes come from roughly 20-year-old vines in Waipara, ensuring concentration, purity, and expression of the region’s distinctive terroir. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve the pure fruit character. The wine then matures on gross lees for three months, enhancing its texture and aromatic complexity. Pale straw with aromas of pear, apple and white blossom. Fresh and vibrant on the palate, with stone fruit and citrus notes, subtle lees texture, and a clean, lively finish.
