Hailing from the southern Rhone appellations of Lirac & Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Lafond Roc-Epine work 85 hectares organically and are moving into biodynamics under the auspices of winemaker Pascal Lafond.
This Lirac is a very rare single parcel of 80+ year old Grenache vines planted on galets roulés and this provides the backbone to this magnificent Lirac, alongside the estate’s finest plots of Syrah and Mourvèdre. The Syrah and Mourvèdre spend 12 months in barrel, a third of which are new, whilst the Grenache is vinified entirely in stainless steel to preserve the maximum of fruit. If it came from over the river in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, you'd be paying twice the amount. This is a glorious, powerful, backward wine with masses of red and black fruits, firm but ripe tannins and a long, spicy finish. This needs time but will age gloriously and represents terrific value for money.
