Brothers JP and Pierre Winshaw have released a new set of wines under the Winshaw Vineyards label. The wines are inspired by their great-grandfather, Dr. William Charles Winshaw, who started the Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery, and their grandfather, Bill Winshaw, who continued the growth of this company. The Winshaw Family Farm is located in Klein Welmoed, Stellenbosch where, in addition to wine, Pierre and JP also produce pasture-reared beef, lamb and eggs.
Aged for 20 months in oak barrels, the wine is richer and broader than its Cabernet Franc-driven counterpart, with red and black berry flavors and hints of vanilla and spice. While it is still evolving, with tannins yet to fully integrate, it retains freshness and restraint with dry, pointed tannins.
This wine is a tribute to the Winshaw family’s dedication to sustainability and regenerative farming, and it honors their pioneering great-grandfather. A cellar-worthy wine, it promises longevity and is a brilliant blend from the heart of Stellenbosch.
Tasting note: This 2019 Charles Winshaw is a full-bodied Bordeaux-style blend, with 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 11% Merlot. The wine has a rich ruby colour and a dry, grippy palate, displaying typical notes of blackberries, black cherry, cassis, and cigar box. It offers a depth and complexity with a full structure that delivers a layered and powerful tasting experience.
Food Match: With grilled steak, lamb, roast beef, hard cheeses, or charcuterie.
