Zweigelt is the second-most planted grape variety in Austria. Wohlmuth Estate is overseen by the family of the same name, and they are involved in every part of the operation. All the estate’s fruit is harvested by hand and transported to the winery in small batches, to ensure that as little damage occurs as possible. Südsteiermark is one of Austria’s most historic wine growing regions, with winemaking in the region dating back to the Romans (and even earlier!). The region is in Southwestern Austria where the vineyards are also amongst the steepest and highest in the country, with slopes reaching between 380 and 650 metres above sea level, with gradients as steep as 80%!
The Wohlmuth Zweigelt has sour cherry fruit and red berry notes on the nose, a touch of spiced tangerine and delicate vanilla spice on the palate. Elegant and supple, with soft tannins rounded out after 10 months spent in neutral oak barriques, this is a surprisingly complex red with lashings of dark plum fruit flavours on the finish. Try with barbecue grilled chicken and other lighter meats. It would also work very well with duck and other game. Another tasty pairing would be a veggie moussaka with lots of aubergines, or an earthy Porcini mushroom risotto.
