Family winery Suertes del Marqués, in the Valle de La Orotava in northern Tenerife, was officially established in 2006 after the family had spent several years growing grapes to supply other wineries around the area.
The approach here is a blend of traditional techniques and minimal-intervention thinking, with the team carrying out all vineyard and cellar work by hand. Natural pesticides and indigenous yeasts are the key weapons here, with very little sulphur added and a process that avoids racking.
A nod to heritage comes from some of the equipment here, with uncoated concrete tanks and French oak foudres sitting alongside stainless steel tanks. Similarly, native grape varieties and traditional vine-training methods are the hallmarks of the vineyard, which aims to preserve and develop the wine-making heritage of the Valle de La Orotava, an area that has been producing wine for around five centuries.
