2020 Vintage Scali

Located in Paarl · South Africa

Husband and wife team Willie and Tania de Waal created the first Scali wines in 1993 – but the story of winemaking in this family goes back much further. The Schoone Oord farm where the wines are now made was bought by Willie’s great-great grandfather in 1877, when he traded it for a diamond he had found in the Northern Cape. Having grown up in a winemaking family, he was keen to establish vines on his new land – and the rest is history…

The farm and cellar are on the south-eastern slopes of Paardeberg, between Paarl and Malmesbury, built on shale soils that give their name to the wine (the Afrikaans word ‘skalie’ combining with the farm name to give the name Scali).

Willie and Tania made their first wines in 1993, producing a little more each year until they had managed a full barrique of pinotage in 1997. It won great praise among their wine-loving friends and inspired them to go for it – by 1999 they were producing 17 barriques.

Since then the winery has developed further, installing contemporary equipment for winemaking, fermentation and storage and converting to organic practices that avoid chemicals at all stages of production.
