South Africa’s most well known wine region has gained fame as much for its tourism offerings as for its wines – in 1975 this coastal wine region near Cape Town became the home of the world’s first official ‘wine route’, taking in the area’s spectacular scenery as well as its independent wineries, many of which have restaurants and accommodation as well as tasting rooms and shops.

Of course, none of this would have been possible if the wines weren’t up to scratch – and indeed this is an area that has developed a reputation for great quality and value. It’s particularly well known for its reds, including its signature pinotage grape as well as cabernet sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends that pair beautifully with steaks and game meats.
