Wines on Tasting in West Road 16.07.16

16 July 2016

I have a Spanish theme to my wines this weekend.

The extaordinary 2011 Marques de Murrieta Capellania is a white Rioja made from 100% Viura grapes grown on the highest part of the Ygay estate in Rioja Alta from vines that were planted way back in 1945.  This is a white wine for red wine drinkers and tends to show like a top white Burgundy.  However it is still astonishing in its uniqueness and complexity and elegance.

Single bottles are £21.99, two for £40 or 6 for £110

The red I am showing is made from the Spanish grape variety Tempranillo that you would normally find in its home of Rioja but on this occasion the fruit comes from the Barossa in Australia.  The 2010 Pintor Tempranillo

The trick with this First Drop wine is that the lads have judged the oak so carefully that they allow the fruit to shine through uninterrupted. This time, in the mind-blowing 2010 vintage, the recipe is 50% new French, 20% new American, 30% old French and all for 20 months of dunking. The fact that the alcohol is reined in at 13.5% means that this oak has not taken the lead and the Tempranillo has the firmness of character to express itself with its brooding strawberry compote and plum duff core.

Single bottle price £19.99
Special price of 6 for £90
