----------------------------------------
China’s has an incredible history and association with wine, dating back thousands of years. Evidence from Neolithic pottery suggesting that wild grapes may have been used in fermented drinks as early as the seventh millennium BC. Yet despite imperial encouragement in the 1st century BC and importing vines from the west, it never became a main part of the Chinese culture
It was in 1892, when Zhang Bishi (Cheong Fatt Tze) founded the Changyu Pioneer Wine Company in Yantai, Shandong Province, that the birth of China’s modern wine industry began. Hampered by the revolution, it was not until China began to enjoy economic success that wine popularity grew again in the past 30 years.
Today China is a serious emerging force in the wine world. Boutique producers are crafting increasingly high-quality wines, while major investors such as Pernod Ricard, LVMH, and Moët Hennessy have recognised the country's considerable potential. We are just starting to see the returns on this investment and the next twenty years will be an incredibly exciting period for Chinese wine.
