2022 Weingut Rieger Pinot Noir Alte Reben - Biodynamic

Discover modern German winemaking at its best with this organic, biodynamic old wine (Alte Rebe) Pinot Noir from Baden. Terroir-driven and expressive, it offers black cherry and forest-floor aromas lifted by an appealing herbal note. Baden is one of Germany’s largest wine regions and remains something of a hidden gem. While its wines are highly regarded at home, they are less widely known internationally than those from the Mosel or Saar. Bordering Alsace and sheltered by the Black Forest and Vosges mountains, Baden enjoys a warmer climate than many German regions, allowing it to produce ripe, expressive reds as well as impressive whites.

Weingut Rieger is one of Baden’s most exciting producers. Once a mixed farm with only a small vineyard, the family shifted its focus entirely to wine around 40 years ago, dedicating the estate to traditional Baden grape varieties. Now led by second-generation Philipp Rieger, the winery places sustainability at the heart of its work. Certified organic since 2005 and biodynamic by Demeter since 2010, it avoids pesticides and herbicides, favouring natural disease prevention, beneficial insects and homeopathic biodynamic preparations.

Tasting Note: This delicious dry red wine, from the Pinot Noir grape (Spatburgunder) in its native Germany) shows wonderfully complex aromas of ripe red cherry, leather, wild strawberry and a hint of mushroom. On the palate, light- to medium-bodied, with a crisp minerality and a long finish.
