Folium Vineyard is a small, premium winery located in the Brancott Valley of Marlborough, New Zealand's most famous wine region. The estate was founded by Takaki Okada, a Japanese-born viticulturist and winemaker who established the vineyard in 2010 after gaining extensive experience in Marlborough winemaking. 

The name"Folium" is the Latin word for "leaf," reflecting the estate's philosophy that great wine begins in the vineyard. The property comprises approximately 8 hectares of vines planted on clay-based soils formed by ancient glaciers and river systems, ideally suited to producing expressive Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. 

Sustainable Viticulture

Folium is particularly renowned for its commitment to:

  • Dry farming (no routine irrigation since 2011)
  • Organic viticulture
  • Hand harvesting
  • Low-intervention winemaking

The vineyard has been certified organic by BioGro since 2013. By eliminating irrigation, the vines are encouraged to develop deep root systems, producing lower yields but greater concentration, structure and terroir expression. 

Winemaking Philosophy

Takaki Okada focuses on producing wines that reflect the unique character of the vineyard rather than a standard Marlborough style. Indigenous yeasts, careful fruit selection and restrained oak use help retain freshness, purity and site expression.
