Owner and Viticulturist Riëtte Kotzé and Winemaker Henry Kotzé (also head winemaker at Mulderbosch, having recently left Morgenster), are the dynamic young ‘pilgrims’ behind this boutique, Platter’s Newcomer of the Year 2021 producer.
Focussing on innovative methods with tried and tested cultivars, as well as experimental styles with unorthodox, unfamiliar cultivars, family-owned Pilgrim Wines sets the stage for delicious, Stellenbosch staples that excite the senses.
In South Africa Shiraz/Syrah tends to be made in two styles – either the more ‘new world’ style of big, ripe and bold (which is often labelled Shiraz) or more ‘old world’ style of restraint and spice (often labelled Syrah). Henry set out to find the perfect midpoint or ‘Goldilocks’ wine.
In the glass the wine is a deep purple with aromas of berries, red and black, mingling effortlessly with vanilla and spice – very old world in style. The palate is much weightier than the nose suggests, which is a nod to the ‘new world’ style, whilst retaining elegance.
