Morgadio da Calçada is a historic property in Portugal’s Douro Valley, centred around an elegant 17th-century manor house and surrounded by the region’s dramatic terraced vineyards and olive groves. Today the wines are produced in partnership with renowned Port house Niepoort, with an emphasis on organic and biodynamic viticulture and old vines, some more than 60 years of age.
The 2020 Late Bottled Vintage is made from a traditional Douro field blend that includes Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and Tinta Roriz. The Port spends four years maturing in large wooden vats before being bottled unfiltered, giving it impressive concentration while retaining freshness and the ability to develop further in bottle.
Tasting Note: Deep ruby-red in colour, this is a beautifully rich and expressive LBV with aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant and plum, layered with touches of violet, cocoa, dark chocolate and warm spice. The palate is concentrated and full-bodied, with generous dark fruit balanced by fresh acidity and fine, rounded tannins. Chocolate and spice emerge again towards the finish, which is long, warming and satisfyingly persistent.
