Founded in 1680, originally only as an exporter, the estate has been the hands of the Richter family for 9 generations, with the 10th , Constantin, poised to take over when the current figurehead, Dirk, retires (both pictured). The estate mansion, built in 1774, is still called home, as is their 1880s winery, housing one of the Mosel’s largest cellars of old oak barrels (known as fuder). 95% of their production is Riesling, all harvested by hand and representing some of the highest quality, most traditional wines in the Mosel. The Wehlener Sonnenuhr is ripe and elegant, with herbal and floral fresh accents leading to smoky, saline pear, lime, and peach. Pair with breaded pork cutlet, prawn pad Thai or fresh, soft goat’s cheese.
