Wines on Tasting in East Molesey 24.12.16

24 December 2016

So….this close to Christmas, what to write about….? What to say in these few missive lines that is a) brief and b) worth reading? It’s a tough choice and made tougher by the fact that I’ve already waffled through two thirds of the space I was planning to give myself for idle thoughts – so here goes:

Tastings next year have been set. Julien & I have spent all of last week sorting out an EM specific tasting list – available in all good bookshops (alright, actually available instore). Secondly, over January, we will be writing the Vineking Guide to Drinking Wine, a series of ten shortish wine education evenings complete with dollops of useful factoids plus glasses of relevant good stuff. Drop us an email at em@thevineking if you want to be kept specifically informed about this, but otherwise keep a sharpish eye on the newsletter!

However, for the last week of the year (drumroll please, Julien…)

On the Vinebar this week

2009 LBV, Krohn Port £15.99, £5/glass
Feeling festive, we decided to put a port on the Vinebar. So, having made this decision the choice of which port to slurp was easy – Krohn LBV! Deep ruby colour with upfront aromas of black plums, spice and dried herbs, firm and evident tannins and a rich, long finish. All this, encapsulated in a deep rich plummy body. Delicious.

2015 Primitivo, Leone de Castris, £12.99, £4/glass
Absolutely stunning Primitivo from a venerable producer down in Puglia. Packed with sour cherries and generous spice, this is definitely my present -reach-for bottle to keep the cold and murk at bay. Gorgeous.

2013 Orchard Block Pinot Noir, Folding Hill, £35.99, £9.50/glass, £62/2 bottles
Jamie Goode says it best: Destemmed, wild ferment, 20 months in barrel. Concentrated and dense with a cedary, spicy underpinning to the ripe cherry and blackberry fruit. Has freshness but also structure and savoury oak influence. Grippy and detailed with firm tannins and a dusty, savoury edge to the fruit. 93/100.”

2015 Lugana Santa Christina, Zenato £19.99, £6/glass
Grapes from the historic vineyard of Podere Massoni produce this wine. Blessed with an amazing body, structure and a delicious, balanced fruity acidity. This is absolutely marvellous, a very serious glass indeed.

2015 Puligny Montrachet, Dom. Meunier, £10/glass, £90/3 bottles
No Christmas is complete without a few bottles of very posh burgundy. Rich and easy going in style with great balance, purity and depth of fruit. Not exactly so struck on the label, but you can’t have it all!
