Marques de Murrieta Rioja - Shipping Offer

06 April 2016

The best series of wines I have tasted in years!

This is genuinely one of the finest ranges of wines I have tasted that all come from one stable, yet make fabulously different wines.  To maintain this incredible level of quality across the range, is testament to Dalmau, Murrieta's owner, having an exacting attention to detail in his very personal pursuit of excellence.  The Tinto Reserva should have been scored higher, as in my mind it's a near-perfect wine - read on!

We will have samples of the Reserva to taste this weekend in all the shops and later in the year we will be hosting a series of Murrieta Dinners in October.

"the highlight is the 2010 Reserva, which might be the best vintage for this wine ever"

2010 Tinto Reserva £21.99/bt

As I mentioned last week, when we tasted the range from Murrieta, I don't think we have ever felt so blown away by a range of wines.  The 2010 Reserva in particular thrilled us all, with it's sense of perfect balance.  Dark, spiced fruit on the nose, the oak is so beautifully integrated, you barely notice it and on the palate the wine simply overwhelms you with is delicious, sensuous, lashings of dark fruit, its balance and sublime length on the palate are utterly joyous.  Drink now - 2025.

2011 Capellania Rioja Blanco £21.99/bt

I adore white Rioja, and Capellania in particular.  For the 2011 they have moved to a more Burgundian style with deep, rich, waxy pear and apple, combined with hazelnut, splashes of vanilla, a creamy weight but then cut and lifted by a very fine balancing acidity, a touch of classic oxidative notes and an undertow of saline minerality. An incredibly long finish that rivals white Burgundy at more than twice the price. Simply epic and a bargain.
Drink now - 2020.

2014 Pazo Barrantes Albarino, Galicia £19.99/bt

A deliciously fresh albarino that comes from their Galician winery. This is a perfect wine to accompany seafood with its delicate floral touches, notes of pear and apple, even a touch of greengage. On the palate this has a delightful clean crisp style but posses a sense of mineral depth and white peach stone.  Clean, cool, elegant and silky, this is a very good example of Albarino...get me some razor clams! Drink now - 2018

2007 Castillo Ygay Reserva, Rioja £69.99/bt

One of Rioja's most consistent icons and despite seeing significant price increase over the past few years, there has been an even greater increase in quality. This has all the style and panache of a vintage Silver Ghost Rolls Royce, it is so refined, pure, elegant and for me reminds me of great Burgundy. You can drink this now but it will cellar for 20 years+

2011 Dalmau, Rioja £54.99/bt

If Ygay is all about class and elegance, Dalmau, with it's 15% Cabernet is a much more modern beast, dare I say stallion. Big, polished with lush dark concentrated fruit, fabulously flashy oak that integrates beautifully and is deeply lush, rich and hedonistic. There's something a little mid-life crisis about this but there's no getting over the fact that it is a deeply satisfying glass of vino that will keep and age over the next 2 decades.
