From a single vineyard in the Piekenierskloof averaging 20 years old at 600-650m elevation. Donovan laments that “we don’t have old Grenache Blanc in South Africa. The oldest Grenache Blanc I knew of was 42 years old, but it was pulled out before I could get my hands on it.” In any event, Grenache Blanc has proven to be a boon for Donovan, who ages his in concrete eggs, which lends a touch of reduction and a fine leesy texture to the wine. Bottled early at the same time as the Cinsault and Cinsault Blanc after around six months. “It’s too delicate to really push for a heavy style.” At 13% ABV the 2019 offers up stony green fruit some lime and white peach and a nice pithy finish. “I could pick slightly later this year and keep acidity as the ripening was very even. We had beautiful canopies shading the grapes, so the vines really flourished, in an area that still feels untapped. If only it were part of the Swartland.”
