Documents found in the estate's library suggest that wine production has been going on at Castillo Perelada since the Middle Ages. Aiming to build on that heritage, Perelada now produces characterful and respected wines that showcase the personality of the single-estate vineyards.

When he acquired the estate in 1923, one of the main aims of new owner Miguel Mateu was to bring the winemaking tradition back to life – and that tradition is thriving to this day, thanks to a new winery that incorporates contemporary technology to bring the best out of the vines and terroir of the Empordà.

The purpose-built winery was designed by RCR Architects, winners of the 2017 Pritzker Prize. It features a comprehensive enotourism experience, and is the first winery in Europe to achieve LEED GOLD sustainability certification.
