The history of Malabaila di Canale is a long and rich one – the first mentions of this land being used to grow vines date from 1362, and current manager Costanza Carrega Malabaila works alongside her daughter Lucrezia, who is the 65th member of the family to hold a management role here.
Although the estate has been growing vines for centuries, it was only in the 1980s that Corradino dal Pozzo Carrega Malabaila started pursuing high quality, working with oenologist and agronomist Valerio Alfredo Falletti to establish an ageing process in the cellars of the estate’s impressive central building.
This was followed by a new cellar set up at the winery’s current location in Cascina Pradvaj in 1990. Contemporary techniques employed here included the construction of an artificial hill over the cellar to maintain an even temperature inside. The winery now has a production level of around 100,000 bottles a year, with a range that includes Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC, Barbera d’Alba DOC and Roero DOCG.
Alongside this cutting-edge winery is a deep commitment to tradition, with the company maintaining a low-intervention viticulture process at its 22 hectares of vineyard and ageing its wines in French oak barriques, tonneaux and casks.
