English wine has undergone something of a revolution. In the past ten years our wines are now becoming internationally recognised. At first it was our sparkling wines but with the warming of our climate, we’re seeing some stunning still wines that hark back to cooler climate wines we used to enjoy from France. This is not surprising when you consider that we are currently experiencing a similar climate that France used to enjoy in the seventies. As such, some of our Chardonnays are on a level with those bright, elegant mineral wines from Chablis in the past and our sparkling wines are more vibrant than many examples from traditional Champagne…..hence the Champagnoise are buying vineyards over here!
The promise of English wine is thrilling. Over time, the vineyards will mature and will begin to give wines even more expression of “Terroir”. When this occurs, we will be able to find our very own 1er and Grand “Crus”, producing wines to rival the very best in the world.
Three Must Visit Vineyards
Albury, Surrey – Surrey’s finest vineyard in our minds. Farmed biodynamically, producing wonderful sparkling wines, a terrific Rose (if you can get some!) and some intriguing vermouth. When you visit you can enjoy a delicious selection of cheese and Charcuterie with a glass at their visitors centre overlooking the vineyards.
Gusbourne, Kent – A contender for best sparkling wine producer in the UK. These guys have a beautiful winery and offer a great opportunity to taste their wines, including a terrific Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
Bolney, Sussex – With it’s well designed café/restaurant over looking the vines, this is worth a visit. Making a very good selection of Sparkling and still wines, plus a vermouth too……delicious!
