----------------------------------------
André Bruyns, assistant winemaker to David and Nadia Sadie started making wine under his own label ‘City on a Hill’ in 2015, with the aim of producing expressive wines with unique qualities, specific to soil type and site location. The grapes for this wine (Chenin Blanc, Viognier, and Muscat) are sourced from 35-year- old dryland vineyards on the Paardeberg Mountain slopes. André ensures that all the grapes are sustainably farmed, using organic and biodynamic practices in the vineyard and winery. The vineyards are planted on granitic soils which enhance the stony and mineral qualities of the wines which are all fermented naturally in old oak barrels and bottled unfiltered to retain texture and the wine’s sense of place.
Brilliant lemon yellow in the glass, with aromas of white blossoms,
fresh cut apple, stone fruit and a gentle minerality on the nose. The palate is wonderfully balanced, with bright acidity and a creamy texture with flavours of ripe apple and yellow peach. The finish has a slight savoury edge, suggesting that while this wine is drinking very well now, it
should evolve nicely over the next few years.
This is a brilliantly versatile wine, pairing well with everything from Indian cuisine to fresh game, seafood platters to charcuterie and cheese boards and even fresh fruit desserts.
