Winemaking took Axel Pauly to estates in New Zealand and California, as well as a stint at the German Embassy in Stockholm during his studies. However, a passion for his home region, the Middle Mosel, eventually drew him home to a life on the family estate.

It hasn’t been an easy journey – the production hall and warehouse were destroyed by fire in 2011, in an incident that also took almost the entire crop of vines as well. Axel, along with his wife and parents, had to rebuild from the ground up – and now the estate boasts a beautiful 70m² building with a three-sided glass wall that allows for stunning views out over the slopes of the vineyards.

A visit here shows off the production techniques that lead to some of the area’s finest barrique-aged reds, along with classic varietals centred around riesling. Axel Pauly’s wines have gained a strong reputation for their fresh fruit aromas and an easy-drinking low alcohol level.
