A selection of fabulous wines from wonderful women winemakers... and some of our favourite's here at the Vineking!
1x 2019 Los Olivos Chardonnay Familia Zuccardi Mendoza
Laura Principiano, Winemaker and Head Oenologist - Zuccardi, Valle de Uco (Mendoza), Argentina: since joining Zuccardi in 2009, she has worked on foundational concepts for the design and construction of the new winery. Since the 2014 harvest, she has been the head oenologist for Zuccardi and instrumental in the direction of wine production. We love the finesse of the house style at Zuccardi present throughout the range. The wines always retain freshness and are more poised than a lot of Argentina's wine output. The Chardonnay is very clean, and elegant. Reminiscent of a soft, Macon chardonnay - delightful, bright and very lightly oaked (super-subtle).
1x 2019 Reserve St Marc Grenache Blanc Foncalieu
Mélanie Loustalet, Winemaker and Oenologist - Les Vignoble Foncalieu, Languedoc, France: as part of the team at one of France's cooperative wineries, Mélanie plays a critical role in ensuring the high quality, organic and sustainable production is implemented throughout the vineyards and winery. Foncalieu makes impressive wines across the range from the St Marc label to the its top Corbières estate - Haut Gléon (especially the sublime rosé: take that d'Esclans!!! The white Grenache is a gem, often overlooked by Vineking customers - a vibrant wine bursting with aromas of grapefruit, pear and summer flowers. In the mouth the wine is equally exuberant, a joyful parade of lemon and lime flavours balanced by juicy acidity. Pair with seafood and salads or simply enjoy on its own.
1x 2019 Pinot Gris Gladstone Vineyard
Christine Kernohan, Owner and MD - Gladstone, Wairarapa, New Zealand: Gladstone Vineyard is a small, family owned Vineyard owned and run by Christine Kernohan. The vineyards are planted on an old riverbed that provides free draining, nutrient rich soils ideal for grape cultivation. This range of wines come exclusively from Gladstone’s own vineyards, and is gaining an international reputation for the quality and finesse of their wines. The Pinot Grigio is juicy and generous with rich fruit flavours and a complex aromas of spice, orange peel, toasted hazelnuts and ripe stone fruit. Drink with lightly spiced dishes.
1x 2019 Los Olivos Malbec Familia Zuccardi Mendoza
Another great wine from Winemaker Laura Principiano at Zuccardi. The Malbec punches well above the price, with wonderful fresh perfume reflecting the cooler part of Mendoza. Wonderful, peppery, floral lift to the plummy Malbec fruit. 50% of the juice spent 10 months in French Oak and shows in this balanced red.
1x 2019 Da Di Toscana Sangiovese IGT Avignonesi
Virginie Saverys, Owner and MD - Avignonesi, Toscana, Italy: although not a winemaker by trade, following a sucessful legal career in Belgium, Virginie followed her passion for wine and bought Avignonesi in 2009 with the express intention of improving an established winery and taking wines to 'the next level'. With firm beliefs about organics, sustainability and biodynamic viticulture, we think she has. The wines from the vineyards in Montalcino are producing astonishingly high quality fruit and the wines reflect this. Da Di is the 'mother-earth' of this project and it sings with delightful Sangiovese perfume and fruit.
1x 2019 Old Vine Cinsault Percheron, South Africa
Nadia Barnard, Winemaker - Waterkloof Wines, Somerset West, RSA: After spending five years as an assistant winemaker at Waterkloof Wines since its inception, Nadia Barnard graduated to winemaker in 2013. She had aspirations of being a winemaker since high school, and studied a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture specialising in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Stellenbosch in order to pursue her dream. After university, Nadia gained extensive experience as a burgeoning winemaker through an internship at Vergelegen Estate and a stint at Flagstone Winery. She has also worked in South Australia, New Zealand and France where she continued to hone her high quality winemaking skills internationally. At Waterkloof, Nadia attributes her high quality wine to “meticulous care and guidance” in her biodynamic farming procedure which utilises natural winemaking. The Percheron range offers great value entry point to the wonderful Waterkloof range. The labelling takes its inspiration from the breed of horse employed to work the vineyards - there are currently 5 Percheron horses residing at the winery.
