2020 Garnacha Joven, Viña Zorzal, Navarra, Spain - 13.5% £16.99 - Based in the centuries-old village of Corella in Navarra’s Ribera Baja, Zorzal are part of a local movement to reclaim grape varieties native to the region, especially Garnacha and Graciano. This 100% Garnacha is from 30-year-old, organically farmed vines grown at around 380m above sea level, ensuring freshness despite the warm climate. Fermented quickly in stainless steel, the wine exhibits classic Garnacha flavours with juicy ripe cherry, cloves and a touch of white pepper, on a soft palate. Perfect with cured ham, meaty stews or mild tandoori dishes.
2020 “Thorny Devil” Grenache, Thistledown, McLaren Vale, Australia - 14.5% £21.99 - Thistledown continues the great tradition of Scottish heritage and ingenuity in the Australian wine industry. Sourced from old bush vines in the McLaren Vale’s sandy soils, this is a wonderful example of why Grenache has been embraced in the New World. After a darkfruited, earthy and perfumed nose, the palate is plush with blackberries and plum, framed by grippy tannins and a fresh, slatey acidity – this is worth decanting. Ideal with a lamb tagine, lean game or punchy cheese and charcuterie.
2020 “Chasing Rabbits” Grenache, Corlea Fourie x Indigo Wine, Wellington, South Africa - 13.5% £19.99 - A collaboration between Indigo, one of our suppliers, and Corlea Fourie of Bosman Family Vineyards, this is a brilliant example of a lighter style of Grenache. The grapes are organically dry-farmed as bush vines planted on granite soils, then picked by hand. A very quick maceration and fermentation ensures the preservation of fresh fruit flavours and leads to a very light colour, nearly a rosé. The result is juicy, crunchy red cherry and plum, dried herbs and pepper, and delicate acidity. Perfect with pizza or risotto and screaming to be served lightly chilled. Flavours of Grenache.
2019 “Secret de Fontenille”, Domaine la Prade Marie, Minervois, France - 13.5% £13.99 - A Vineking stalwart, we’ve been shipping wines directly from this great organic Languedoc estate for years. This particular wine is a blend, of Grenache and Carignan with a little Syrah. In other words, it’s representative of the Languedoc’s success as a producer of wonderfully drinkable Grenache-based blends - the grape’s bread and butter. Rich in dark fruits, smoke and garrigues notes on a silky palate, “Secret” is a great pairing for a herbed rack of lamb, ratatouille, or any dish flavoured with Herbes de Provence.
2019 “Centenaire” Blanc, Domaine Lafage, Côtes du Roussillon, France - 13.5% £18.99 - In the family for over 200 years, Domaine Lafage and its owners Jean-Marc and Eliane have long been ambassadors for the region. Their “Centenaire” is a blend of 80% Grenache Blanc and Gris and 20% Roussanne, all from vines between 90 and 100 years old, which is impressive longevity considering the area’s strong reputation for red wine. 30% is aged in new oak, the rest in stainless steel, making for a wine full of citrus, peach and floral notes on a textured palate, followed by a hint of spice and a fresh finish. Perfect with simply grilled fish, ceviche, or a gratin dauphinoise.
NV Banyuls 5 Ans d’Age, l’Abbé Rous, Banyuls, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - 16% £19.99 - The Cave de l’Abbe Rous is distinguished by its incredible cellars full of ancient oak barrels of huge and, in some cases, unique sizes. In these it ages its many wines, including this Vin Doux Naturel, a blend of half Grenache Noir and half Grenache Gris, fortified and then aged in a 200-year-old wooden vat for 5 years. Ripe red fruits, chocolate, and dates, dense and smooth and yet with good freshness. A stunning match for any chocolate-based dessert or even just a bar of good dark chocolate, pears poached in red wine, or a strong blue cheese.
