Based close to the Swiss and French borders, near Basel, Hanspeter makes predominantly red wines, all from vineyards at 250-400m and mostly on limestone soils, aiding in the retention of acidity and elongating the growing season for better complexity. The wines see about 10% new oak, matured for 22 months in this case. The Gestad is a complex, generous but obviously cool-climate Syrah, with black pepper, lavender, and smoked bacon on the nose. Rich but fresh black fruits follow, with juicy acidity and dusty tannins, finishing on cloves and a hint of toasty oak. Drink with roast duck, beef or lamb, as well as smoky roast aubergine, dishes with black olives or any garlicky sausage.
