Emile Balland started his domaine in 1999 and today has just 5ha of vineyard, though his family have been making wine in the Loire since 1650. The vast majority of his holdings are in the relatively unknown Coteaux du Giennois with both chalky and flinty soils allowing Emile to blend inexpensive wines that deliver surprising amounts of complexity and concentration. He also owns a hectare in Sancerre.
The grapes are destemmed before being put in a vat for 15 to 21 days. This ensures good progress of alcoholic fermentation. This wine is matured in tanks for 8 to 10 months after the malolactic fermentation is complete. Fabulous accompaniment to grilled red meat or peppered charcuterie. It can also be enjoyed as an aperitif.
