The Banfi estate is on the younger side of this group, but the Mariani family name already carries an awful lot of weight in Italy’s wine community. Brothers John and Harry arrived from the USA in the 1970s and established Banfi in memory of their Great Aunt Teodolinda, a lay attendant to Pope Pius XI, who raised their father Giovanni to appreciate fine food and wine. This appreciation he then passed onto his own children. Since then, Banfi has been as the forefront of developing the best clones of Sangiovese, experimenting with composite material tanks for maturation, and transforming their estate into an enviable destination for wine tourists. Now 3rd generation Cristina Mariana-May leads the estate, overseeing operations not only in Tuscany but also Piedmont, as well as Oregon and Washington State in the US. The ‘Poggio alle Mura’ boasts aromatic red fruits, tobacco, liquorice and hazelnut with punchy, food-friendly acidity and tannins. Pair with simply roasted lamb, hard cheeses, or a hearty stew.
