In 1970 Luis Cañas changed two hundred years of tradition and became the first winemaker in Rioja Alavesa to bottle his young wine rather than sell it as bulk.

This bold move, and his continued pioneering spirit, has cemented the winery's enviable reputation as one of the most progressive in the region. Sheltered below the watchful Sierra Cantabria, the vineyards are all old, small plots on chalky-clay soils with a dedicated team of vineyard workers carrying out organic practices and a purpose built, fully equipped accommodation block was built for the entire vineyard team in 2006.

"Having tasted this wine over the years I noticed that this has now moved in style from the fully traditional to a more modern style.  The vine average 60 yrs in age which means they are able to survive the hotter and dryer summers they are subjected to.  Limestone soils at high altitudes create the freshness in the Viura which makes up 90% of the blend

This wine offers up hints of flowers, citrus notes as well as a lick of hazelnut that comes from the 5 month barrel ageing.

All citrussy with a clean line of acidity.  The Malvasia adds a bit of fat to the blend giving the wine some added body.  The wines old vine fruit shows on the finish with balanced fruit and acidity and a length that subtley sits on the palate long after taking a drink of this effortless wine." - Mark, The Vineking West Road Manager
