C.V.N.E. (Compañia Vinicola del Norte España) was established in 1879 by two brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa, and is still run today by their direct descendents. This wine is a white Rioja with a twist! Fermentation of the Viura grapes starts off fairly predictably, at cool temperatures in stainless steel. Once the fermentation is complete, the wine then spends time on its lees on oak barrels to develop texture for around 8 months. This is where it gets interesting – the uniqueness of this wine lies in the addition of a small quantity of Manzanilla sherry. Yes, you read that right!
This ‘dosage’ contributes unusual yet surprisingly moreish characteristics to the wine such as aromas of chamomile and dried stone fruits with a persistent, saline finish. This is complemented by the more traditional notes of pear, green apple and white flowers. Present this intriguing wine as an apéritif, or pair with fresh seafood, grilled white meats, or save for the after-dinner cheeseboard, loaded with mild creamy cheeses such as Brie, Chevre and Ricotta.
