The Coursodon family have been making exceptional Saint Joseph for four generations from 16 hectares of organic vineyards surrounding the town of Mauves. Pierre Coursodon’s son, Jérôme, now runs this famous estate and in less than ten years has taken it to new heights. Red wines of increased richness and purity have resulted from lowering yields, picking later and 100% destemming.
An increasing proportion of the red wines are aged in 600 litre casks rather than the traditional, smaller (225 litre) barrels, which maximises their fruit flavours. Meanwhile, their white Saint Josephs have become some of the finest white wines of the northern Rhône.
The steep, granitic vineyards in the villages of Mauves, Tournon and Saint Jean de Muzols that produce this wine are planted with 100% syrah. The bunches are 100% destemmed in order to maximise the expression of fruit and then aged in both 600 litre demi-muids from Burgundy tonnellerie Damy and 225 litre pie?ces from Taransaud and Chassin. This wine offers plenty of blackberry and cassis fruit. Finishes sweet and long. Drink 2022-2026.
