Bodegas Covila is in fact a co-operative located in La Rioja, that has been making some terrific wines since 1989.
The Covila de Alta Expression (AEX) is produced from hand harvested grapes from 35 year old bush vines. Malolactic fermentation and lees ageing are carried out in new American and French barrels with varying toast levels, providing the aromatic complexity and structure that such a wine deserves. After racking and lees ageing in the barrel, the wine is aged in the same barrels for 17 months. It is then bottled, where it continues the ageing process.
The aroma is intense and very complex, the red fruits blending with rosemary, thyme, chocolate and dark-roasted notes. This is an old-vine Tempranillo which offers all the fruit and smooth tannins of a well-aged wine. It is dense and ripe, with a long, very harmonious finish.
Covila is both a renowned Rioja winery and one of Spain’s top wine co-operatives – and it’s proud of this status. Being part of a co-operative, they say, is far more than just signing a few legal forms – it’s a statement of engagement, co-operation and joint responsibility.......
