Piedmont is the perfect region for Nebbiolo – the vineyards have full exposure to nourishing sunlight, from sun-up to sun-down. The mountainous terrain also promotes fresh breezes and light rains in the spring which provide steady irrigation for the vines while allowing them to remain well-ventilated and thus avoiding any diseases caused by damp.
These perfect conditions are what brought the family behind Cantine Povero to Piedmont in the first place. Being 4th generation wine producers, Cantine Povero can trace their winemaking roots back to 1837 and the group is still run by descendents of the same family today. The winery produces classic examples of Piedmontese wines from many of the provinces’ sub-regions, such as Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, and arguably their most important wine is their expression of Nebbiolo, as you have here.
This is their example of a classic Barolo; it is intense in colour, a deep garnet red, with initial aromas of violet petals, wild rose and cinnamon on the nose. Allow the wine to open up and classic aromas of the Langhe emerge – earthy truffles, dried mushrooms and hazelnut. The palate is warm, earthy and full, making this a perfect match for a rich Duck Ragu with polenta, or a selection of Italian hard cheeses, such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino.
