2017 The Scoundrel Shiraz/Grenache Magpie Estate Barossa Valley

The Scoundrel wines are a collaboration between Noel Young of Noel Young wines and Rolf Binder of Barossa. Having got mildly miffed at the poor range of old-fashioned Australian reds, Noel started looking around, before finally going into partnership with Rolf, a winemaker known for his devotion to all things red. together they founded Magpie Vineyards, so called because they sniped the best fruit from wherever they found it rather then growing their own vines, having not found exactly where they wanted to be but too impatient not to get started. Finally, they have settled on a Small Town vineyard and the quality of the wines has gone up significantly - hard, considering we were already firm fans!
This blend is 65% Shiraz all from their vineyard and 35% Grenache from Nelder, who have been supplying the Magpie's for years. A combination of old oak, steel tank and new oak all play their part in making this bright, almost perfumed red. Red and black berry, white pepper, spice and a touch of oak. Full flavoured, with lovely bright fresh berry and cherry fruit, spice, pepper and oak.
Bright and almost creamy. A very attractive juicy style with some depth. Versatile food style too.
