Located just north-west of the town of Chinon, Chateau de Coulaine is an incredibly old vineyard site, with its winemaking heritage dating all the way back to the 1300s! The current proprietors (the 3rd generation of the family) pride themselves on their sensitive management of their vineyards, ensuring that their impact upon the local environment and biodiversity is kept to an absolute minimum. They have been certified 100% organic since 1997. You could say that when it comes to practicing organic viticulture, the devil is in the detail, so it is rather apt that this wine carries the name ‘Diablesse’.

The fermentation is kick-started using natural yeasts, in neutral concrete vats, preserving the vibrancy of the fruit. It is then aged in barrel for 11 months prior to bottling, unfined and unfiltered, with addition of sulphites kept as low as possible. It is intense, yet elegant on the nose with perfectly ripe elderberry aromas. Silky and fresh, on the full side of medium-bodied, a palate of bramble fruit with a subtle touch of peppery spice.
