Bodeguera de Valencisco was established in 1998 as a collaboration between ex-Bodegas Palacios Luis Valetin and Carmen Encisco. Both entered the partnership with a wealth of experience in Rioja wine and together they decided to focus all their efforts on a single style – a classically structured and subtle Reserva. Situated in the town of Ollauri, just 4km from Haro, they are at the north-west limit of Rioja Alta and have vineyards at altitudes of 400 to 600 metres. The climate here is heavily influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic and the winds cool the grapes on the vine, enhancing their acidity, finesse and aromatic complexity.
Rather aptly, the Tempranillo grapes for this wine were harvested in the October of the 2016 vintage and were aged for 17 months in French oak. The barrels are all less than 3 years old, so that they impart that typically Rioja characteristic of vanilla spice. This Reserva has a savoury nose with perfumed notes of violet and blackberry. It is so elegant, with lots of classic spice, fine tannins and a long finish. Pair with all manner of game, hearty autumnal pies and strong cheeses.
