ÒAt first I didnÕt think that 2016 could be better than the excellent 2015 for Barolo, but I have to say the more 2016s I taste the more I like them and the more I think they are better than 2015 in the end.Ó James Suckling Ð August 4th 2020
And how right James is Ð the parcels of stock coming out of Piemonte at present are absolutely blinding. We have been waiting for releases from the better producers, and they are starting to arrive!
Cascina Adelaide have been on our radar for some years now. I was out there in 2014, sampling different vineyards on a quick winter trip, and we ended the trip at Cascina Adelaide. The facility is astounding: the last fifteen years of investment by Amabile Droco has resulted in one of the finest winemaking settings in Barolo, a land not shy of great architecture. The most impressive bit? The whole structure is run on gravity Ð juice flows downhill to its final resting place in the cellar with not a pump required. This complements the organic, native yeasts, minimal sulphur, hand-sorting practices of the estate.
From their straight Barolo DOCG to each of the stunning single vineyard parcels, Cascina Adelaide offer some of the finest modern Barolo being produced today: lively, complex formations full of orange skin, plum and tobacco with incredibly vibrant tannins and excellent balancing acidity. They will cellar well for several decades to come but drink relatively well young as well. In 2016, Amabile has absolutely smashed it: superstar wines with huge potential. I absolutely urge you to pick up some cases for adding to any cellar.
