I first came across the Lettre d’Eloise wines when I was over in Burgundy, working the 2009 vintage with Bertrand. In the evenings, he would spend time introducing each of his wines, finding five minutes to discuss each one. This stuck in my mind – both as a glorious wine, but because of the story as well.
Made from vines he planted around the time of her birth just to the east of Nuits-Saint-Georges, where the soil is heavier. The eponymous Eloise is his eldest granddaughter. The “letter” is both the vines and the wines he makes from – every year, a new expression of the vines he planted for his family’s future.
And what a lovely wine. Showing citrus and acacia in abundance, framed with a delicate vein of acidity. A real roundness captures the freshness of barrel-fermented fruit.
…..A few days ago myself and my colleague found a bottle of the 2015 vintage, and in a spirit of enquiry cracked it open. It was delicious! It had fattened out slightly and developed some spicy cake notes on the back palette but had not lost that delicate acidity.
I would fully expect, with some ageing, for this to do similar. At £90 for 6x75cl, this is a superb glass of delicious white with a significant pedigree - but without the sometimes hefty price tag.
