Lanzerac is steeped in history, having been established in 1692 – a mere 13 years after Stellenbosch itself and is the third oldest farm in the area. The first owner was Isaac Schrijver who planted the very first vineyards and, unsurprisingly, named the farm Schoongezicht, meaning wonderful view. In the early 1800’s the first cellar was erected.
One of the property’s most influential owners was Elizabeth Catherina ‘Kitty’ English, who bought Schoongezicht in 1920. Mrs English changed the estate’s name to Lanzerac, rumoured to be after General Charles Lanrezac – a French General, who commanded the French Fifth Army at the outbreak of World War I.
The estate has been making fine wine throughout it’s history, and their range of premium-yet-not-expensive Stellenbosch wines are definitely among the VK’s favourites.
Elizabeth Katherina English bought the farm Schoongezicht in 1914 for £18 000, subsequently renamed the farm ‘Lanzerac’ and transformed it during her nine years of ownership into one of the most modern wineries in the Cape. This wine is a tribute to this formidable lady.
The Lanzerac Mrs English 2016 is a limited selection of the finest Chardonnay barrels of the particular year. Subtle and elegant with a steely core, this wine perfectly mirrors its illustrious namesake in every way. The wine portrays freshness and perfume to the concentrated flavours of grapefruit, marmalade, and soft vanilla undertones. Careful oaking and extended lees contact have added texture and richness leaving the wine seamless, subtle and satisfying.
