Lanzerac is steeped in history, having been established in 1692 – a mere 13 years after Stellenbosch itself and is the third oldest farm in the area. The first owner was Isaac Schrijver who planted the very first vineyards and, unsurprisingly, named the farm Schoongezicht, meaning wonderful view. In the early 1800’s the first cellar was erected.
One of the property’s most influential owners was Elizabeth Catherina ‘Kitty’ English, who bought Schoongezicht in 1920. Mrs English changed the estate’s name to Lanzerac, rumoured to be after General Charles Lanrezac – a French General, who commanded the French Fifth Army at the outbreak of World War I.
The estate has been making fine wine throughout it’s history, and their range of premium-yet-not-expensive Stellenbosch wines are definitely among the VK’s favourites.
This blend, made from 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 12% Shiraz, 12% Petit Verdot, 10% Malbec and 6% Shiraz was matured in a combination of new and 2nd fill 300 Liter French oak barrels for a period of 20 months. The six varietals were individually fermented and matured before careful blending and bottling. The Lanzerac Le Général is a limited barrel selection of the best red wine of a particular vintage.
This full-bodied Cabernet-based blend announces vanilla and nutmeg spice before a flood of dark berries, cooked plums and blackcurrants assail the palate. Dark chocolate and hints of smoke is supported by sturdy smooth tannins and an endless finish. The Le Général has the potential to mature over a five to ten year period and will only get better with time.
