Syrah/Shiraz from Paarl

Syrah? Shiraz? They’re often mentioned together, but are they the same or different? The answer is ‘same but different’ – both styles stem from the same grape, although the jury is still out as to its exact origins (variously claimed to be France, Italy and Persia). Syrah is the name given to the grape in the Old World, with shiraz being adopted by the New World (particularly Australia).

While somewhat similar, these two wines are distinct in style these days, with syrah typically lighter in alcohol and tannins and shiraz characteristically richer and more full bodied. Either one pairs well with grilled and roasted meats.
